Liverpool reached an agreement and signed striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle United for what is a British transfer record deal.
Liverpool, the Premier League champions, were happy to have their £125 million ($170m) bid accepted to sign the Sweden international, though Newcastle sources state the deal is worth £130m.
Isak expectedly did his medical ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline at 7 p.m. BST, 2 p.m. ET.
It brought an end to one of the summer’s most-protracted transfer sagas, with Isak having spent more than a month agitating for a move away from Newcastle.
The 25-year-old did not join the club on their preseason tour of Asia and had not featured for Eddie Howe’s side this season.
He also released a statement earlier this month in which he claimed promises had been “broken” by the Newcastle hierarchy and insisted a move this summer would be in the best interests of all parties.
Isak is now the most expensive signing in Premier League history, surpassing Chelsea’s Enzo Fernández who joined the London club for an initial £106.3m from Benfica in February 2023.
It marks the second time this summer that Liverpool have broken their club transfer record, with Arne Slot’s side having committed spending an initial £100m — plus a potential £16m in add-ons — to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in June.
Meanwhile, Virgil Van Dijk has urged Liverpool not to let Joe Gomez leave on deadline day.

Liverpool also had a deal agreed to sign defender Marc Guéhi from Crystal Palace.
The 25-year-old was granted permission to undergo a medical in London after Liverpool saw a £35 million ($47m) bid accepted on deadline day Monday. He has reportedly about to sign a five-year contract running until the summer of 2030 before the deal collapsed.
Talks had been ongoing between the two clubs for several weeks, with just one year remaining on Guéhi’s Palace contract. He is on the last year of his contract which could see him leave Selhurst Park for free next summer.
Guehi joined Palace from Chelsea in 2021 and has gone on to captain the side, making 155 appearances and helping the club to win their first major trophy in last season’s FA Cup final.
Here are a few other movements during the transfer window:
City are set to pay PSG £26 million ($35 million) for Donnarumma.
Ederson will join Fenerbahce for £12.1 million ($16 million).
Jadon Sancho move to Aston Villa on a season-long loan from Man. United.
Erik ten Hag has been sacked as Bayer Leverkusen manager after 3 games.
Arsenal completed a loan deal for Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapié.
Newcastle replaced Isak with £55m Brentford striker Yoane Wissa.
Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson to Bayern Munich for a £15m loan fee.
Tottenham completed a loan deal for PSG striker Randal Kolo Muani.
Rasmus Højlund completes Napoli loan, €44m obligation.
Chelsea sign Facundo Buonanotte on loan from Brighton.
