A sign placed on the compound of the Vieux-Fort Fishing Complex recently, which indicates that the facility will be rehabilitated, has generated much interest among residents.
That’s because over the years, they have been yearning for the facility to be rehabilitated.
However, despite indicating that the rehabilitation of the facility will be a very good thing for the community, some residents say they are concerned that it may not be completed before the upcoming general elections.
They are also concerned that the sign does not indicate who has the contract for the job or the date work will commence on the rehabilitation of the facility.
Ali Grey, a fisher in the community said: “The rehabilitation of the Vieux-Fort Fishing Complex will be a very good thing for Vieux-Fortians, especially for the fisheries. It will make the facility more comfortable and appealing, and also improves the working environment for the fisheries.”
Leonard Prescott said: “I support the rehabilitation of the complex fully. The complex is not in a good condition and needs of improvement.”
Ken Richard said: “I will not be unhappy if the rehabilitation of the complex is not completed before the upcoming general elections.”
He said he hopes that the placing of the sign at the complex is not a political gimmick.
“Why the name of the person who has the contract for the job is not placed on the sign and the date work is scheduled to commence on the project?” a resident asked.
“Better late than never,” another resident said, adding that he hopes the project will be completed before the general elections because whenever an administration gets into office just after winning an election, it usually stops projects commenced by the former administration.
Member of Parliament for Vieux-Fort South, Kenny D. Anthony, who recently announced his retirement from elective politics, in the past, has always indicated that the government had intentions to rehabilitate the complex.
Since the construction of the 20 million US dollars facility in 2000 with the assistance of the Japanese government, no major renovation has been done to the complex.
