A young Saint Lucian artist is leveraging her music and literary talents to engage the nation’s youth, elevating their consciousness and actively steering them away from criminal activity, especially the destructive paths of gun violence and gang-related warfare.
The violent acts that have devastated communities and shattered countless families can no longer be ignored.
Donell Daniel asserts, “I am harnessing the power of music to confront the urgent issue of violence and crime in our streets. My new song, Peace in the Streets, fuses Afro-beat and Soca rhythms with a compelling message of unity, love, and hope for our island’s youth.”
She strongly emphasizes that the violence must stop: “We demand peace, we demand unity—for the sake of our children. Let our island breathe,” she declares, calling on communities to unite for a common cause.
Daniel makes it clear: “The lyrics vividly depict the struggles faced by local youth, from societal pressures to systemic neglect, while celebrating Saint Lucia’s rich culture. This song encourages listeners to take active steps in building safer communities.”
With its catchy chorus and relatable message, Peace in the Streets is not merely a song; it is a powerful movement, challenging Saint Lucians to rise above violence and embrace a commitment to peace.
Donell’s opening lines in the song chants:
“Saint Lucia stand tall, stand strong
We need more love in the streets …too much violence in the streets
We need peace, we need unity
Hands up, put the guns down please
For the children let the island breathe …”
