By Reginald Andrew

In a highly engaging event, the Gros Islet Mini Stadium (GIMS) was officially renamed the Francis “Baba” Lastic Grounds, honoring a prominent figure in national and regional football and a key player in the development of the game within his community.

.

Lastic relished the renaming ceremony, which featured a dynamic display of talent last Saturday, recognizing several distinguished sports personalities for their significant contributions. He graciously accepted the applause from the crowd as he prepared for the second match in a Semi-Professional Football League (SPFL) double header.

When Sports Minister and Gros Islet MP Kenson Casimir took the podium, the air was charged with anticipation for a critical announcement.

“Tonight, we honor our ‘Sporting Legacy’ and commit to inspiring a bright future in sports for the Gros Islet constituency,” he declared, prompting enthusiastic applause from supporters.

Casimir emphasized, “We celebrate the extraordinary achievements of athletes, coaches, and administrators from Gros Islet who have dedicated their lives to sport, both locally and internationally. From football and cricket to athletics, volleyball, and golf, these individuals have excelled in their respective fields and inspired generations of young athletes.”

.

He continued, asserting that these sports luminaries have made an indelible impact on the sporting landscape and will continue to shape the future of sports in Saint Lucia.

Highlighting Lastic’s impressive journey, Casimir remarked on his evolution from a young player in the U15 ranks to his leadership roles in community football with Northern United FC, representation on the national team, and a professional career in Trinidad & Tobago (T&T) as a steadfast defender.

Lastic’s ascent into technical roles includes leading the Gros Islet men’s team and serving as an assistant coach of the Piton Boyz Senior Men’s team while also heading the junior squad. The power of sports was unmistakably showcased at this event, reinforcing that it was a celebration of the sporting legacy in Gros Islet.

During the interval, the atmosphere intensified with an organized display featuring top local performers, along with enthusiastic young footballers, dancers, and cheerleaders who captivated the audience.

Sports fans and supporters flocked to the event, which not only provided vibrant entertainment but also showcased an exhilarating SPFL double header.

Casimir recognized several other sports personalities from the community, noting that some would have their names prominently featured in structures within the FBL Stadium.

He announced the names of several prominent sports figures who would enhance the facility’s prestige:

– Charlie Sonson: Patrons will enter the grounds via Charlie Sonson Drive, honoring the iconic squash player.

– Alton Crafton: The main grandstand will be named the Alton Crafton Stands, acknowledging his significant contributions to cricket development, particularly for young talent from the constituency.

– John Eugene: The John Eugene Stands will be installed on the west side of the facility, recognizing two of the greatest cricketers and coaches from the community.

 – Elijah Joseph: The pavilion accommodating the Gros Islet Post Office will be refurbished as the Elijah Joseph Youth and Sports Centre. Joseph, a former midfielder for Northern United, W Connection (T&T), and the national men’s football team, will have a facility that includes gym equipment for local athletes.

– Terry Verdant: The adjacent Terry Verdant Multipurpose Court will serve basketball, volleyball, and netball players. Verdant is a former national volleyballer turned coach and is an active golfer.

In the past 18 months, the playing field, which hosts cricket, rugby, football, and school track and field events, has undergone substantial upgrades. New lighting has been installed, a wall and grandstand have been built, and parking bays are now in place. Future plans include adding a new pavilion and a second stand.

In an exciting Tier 1 showdown, Gros Islet opened its account at the newly upgraded FBL Stadium with Lastic on the bench, achieving a solid 2-0 victory over Mabouya Valley.

Earlier, Central Castries convincingly defeated Dennery 3-1 in another Tier 1 match.
