Elijah Joseph, a former national footballer and professional, has been honored for his exceptional contributions to the sport and youth development with the renaming of the Gros Islet playing field to the Francis “Baba” Lastic Grounds.

Recognized as one of Saint Lucia’s most distinguished footballers, a facility at the FBLG will be named the Elijah Joseph Youth and Sports Development Centre.

Sports Minister and Parliamentary Representative (MP) for Gros Islet, Kenson Casimir, emphasized the achievements of the community’s sporting legends, during last weekend’s opening activity.

Elijah Joseph’s journey began at Gros Islet Primary School, where his passion for football was ignited. Under Coach Patrick ‘Pataco’ Phillip at Northern United, Joseph sharpened his skills and ascended through the ranks. He was selected for the Saint Lucia Under-23 national team, where he captained the squad, and later led the senior national team with the same honor.

His talent and leadership earned him a professional contract with W Connection FC in Trinidad and Tobago, where he excelled for 13 years. As team captain, Joseph steered the club through its most successful era, securing more trophies than ever before.

Upon retiring at age 38, Joseph left a legacy of excellence and resilience that has made him a respected figure in the region’s football scene.

Following his retirement, he transitioned into coaching, dedicating himself to nurturing the next generation of Saint Lucian athletes. He has coached teams at the Under-13, Under-19, Under-23, and senior levels, and currently leads the Gros Islet team in the Semi-Professional Football League (SPFL).

Under his guidance, the team has consistently showcased strong performances, solidifying Gros Islet’s reputation as a powerhouse in local football.

“Elijah Joseph is a proud son of Gros Islet who has represented this community and our nation with distinction, both on and off the field,” Minister Casimir stated.

“His commitment to football and youth development is the driving force behind the renaming of the Gros Islet Community Centre to the Elijah Joseph Youth and Sports Development Centre—a space destined to inspire future generations, just as Elijah has inspired us,” the Gros Islet MP added.

The building, previously known as the Community Centre, which houses the Gros Islet Post Office, will undergo refurbishment and modernization to serve as a state-of-the-art facility for youth and sports development.

The upper level will include table tennis and alternative sports facilities, while the lower level will be equipped with a strength training gym for athletes, cricketers, and footballers.

The Elijah Joseph Youth and Sports Development Centre will ensure that his legacy continues to uplift and inspire future generations.
