Jeremiah Norbert, Micoud North’s parliamentary representative, has announced the establishment of a remedial centre that will provide crucial care and services to people with disabilities.
He emphasized on the government’s credo of Putting People First, stating that his personal experience with disabilities has reinforced his resolve, improved his sensitivity, and increased his devotion to justice and inclusiveness.
He claims he is committed to building a “journey of resilience, hope, and solidarity” for all people with disabilities in the community.
Reflecting on his rehabilitation from a motorcycle accident four years ago, Norbert stated that his unrelenting drive to overcome hardship is fuelled by the unwavering support of family, friends, and ministerial colleagues.
“The questions raised stem not from doubt, but from a long-held hope—a hope that the marginalized community deserves,” Norbert stated during his latest budget presentation addressing the problems of people with disabilities.
He emphasizes the importance of laying a solid basis for this new ministry, emphasizing that “the structures, policies, and programmes we implement must be proactive, sustainable, and impactful.”
He announced the allocation of $216,758 for the construction of a Disability Unit, demonstrating urgency and commitment to progress. He refers to this as a “historic” initiative.
He also announced that $360,000 has been set aside for the development of a dedicated Prosthetic Centre. This centre will help community people who cannot afford prosthetic limbs.
Norbert stated that the National Council for Persons with Disabilities frequently fails to meet the need for these services. Furthermore, the National Prosthetic Centre will offer essential care at a reasonable cost to people with illnesses, accident victims, and others in need.
He stated that there are misconceptions about the role of the Crime Prevention Department.
“There is a pervasive misconception regarding the responsibilities of the Crime Prevention Department, and I will clarify this. The Department of Crime Prevention is not responsible for police operations; that responsibility lies with the Ministry of National Security,”, Norbert clarified, stating that the Crime Prevention Department is tasked with developing effective crime strategies and coordinating overall crime prevention efforts.
He confirmed the appointment of a Research Officer to the Crime Prevention Department, whose responsibilities will include reviewing the many units and agencies involved in crime prevention and offering strategic comments to improve collaboration and efficacy of their activities.
