Thirty-three Field Staff and Comfort Station Attendants Earn CVQ Qualifications, Recognized Throughout CARICOM
The National Conservation Authority (NCA) has achieved a historic milestone with its inaugural graduation ceremony, which celebrated the accomplishments of 33 individuals under the theme “Empowering Staff Through Institutional Strengthening.”
This momentous event recognized the successful completion of a rigorous training program designed to enhance the efficiency of field staff and comfort station attendants.
Launched in February 2024, this initiative provided essential professional development opportunities for NCA employees, equipping them with the critical skills needed to maintain Saint Lucia’s parks, beaches, and protected areas to the highest standards.
With a remarkable 100 percent pass rate, the dedication and commitment of both participants and facilitators were clearly evident.
Executive Director of the Saint Lucia Technical Vocational Education and Training Unit (SLU-TVET), Perry Thomas, addressed the graduates, commending their achievements and challenging them to continue striving for excellence.
“What you have attained today enables you to be highly competitive in the job market. By engaging in lifelong learning, you have enhanced your skill set. The certificate you now hold qualifies you to advance in your career,” he asserted.
NCA’s General Manager, James Perineau, emphasized the comprehensive training and certification process that is recognized throughout the Caribbean.
“Tweny-six conservation assistants have been trained in maintenance and conservation of parks and protected terrestrial areas, while seven comfort station attendants have completed training in housekeeping, both at CVQ level 2,” he stated.
“This qualification opens new doors for employment and professional growth. We are confident that the skills our employees have gained will significantly enhance the upkeep of our beaches and protected areas, directly contributing to environmental sustainability and public health.”
Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, Investment, Creative Industries, Culture, and Information, Ann Margret Adams, highlighted the critical role of the graduates in preserving Saint Lucia’s natural beauty.
She praised their commitment to maintaining clean and welcoming public spaces, which are essential for the sustainability of the island’s tourism industry.
“Today marks not only the conclusion of a training programme but the beginning of a new chapter in your professional journey.
Be ambassadors of conservation, stewards of our environment, and exemplars of professionalism in all your endeavors. Your work is vital to the success of our tourism industry and the sustainable future of Saint Lucia,” she affirmed.
This initiative was backed by an $18 million investment, showcasing the determination of the Saint Lucia Technical Vocational Education and Training Institution (SLUTVET), the National Authorizing Authority (NAO) under the European Union and GEPSED Programme, and the NCA to promote workforce development and environmental sustainability.
Graduates shared impactful testimonials about their journey, overcoming initial fears—especially regarding computer-based learning—and expressed deep gratitude to the training team for their steadfast support and encouragement.
This graduation ceremony is a testament to resilience, personal growth, and the transformative power of education in strengthening institutions. The NCA’s initiative will set a strong precedent for future training programmes, ensuring ongoing professional development within the sector.
