The battle against mounting waste took a significant leap forward as Massy Stores joined forces with Greening the Caribbean to tackle environmental challenges head-on. The re-launch of a recycling initiative seeks to provide Saint Lucians with a responsible and sustainable solution to dispose of their electronic waste and aluminum products, preventing them from contributing to landfill overflow.
Greening the Caribbean is recognized for its specialized waste management and recycling services, and this program is designed to promote a circular economic approach to waste management, where materials are continually reused and recycled instead of being indiscriminately discarded.
The latest collection drive took place on Saturday, March 22nd, and focused on collecting electronic waste, aluminum cans, and tin cans. The aim is to provide Saint Lucians with a proper disposal option and to encourage responsible waste management practices, thus preventing harmful materials from polluting the environment.
Wayne Neale, Chief Operating Officer of Greening the Caribbean, explained the importance of the initiative. “Massy has been an integral partner in this effort to promote sustainability in Saint Lucia. Our shared commitment to protecting the environment is evident in this drive, which offers residents a safe and responsible way to dispose of their electronics and recyclable materials.”
The collection trailer was stationed at the Massy Mega location, welcoming recyclables from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, where residents could drop off their e-waste, aluminum, and tin cans.
Kelly Mitchell, Division Head for Marketing and Corporate Communications at Massy Stores, emphasized the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability and the company’s growing efforts to make a positive impact on the island. “At Massy, we’re proud to be part of this initiative to promote a cleaner, greener environment. We’re not only helping to reduce waste but also providing our customers with a simple and effective way to be part of the recycling solution. This is just one step in our ongoing commitment to protect the environment. We’re not just collecting recyclables—we’re creating an opportunity for communities to actively participate and make a difference. We want to make recycling as easy as possible for everyone, and this is just one of the many ways we can all come together to put a positive impact back into the environment.”
One local resident, Andre Philip, shared his satisfaction with the new recycling option. “I had old electronics that I didn’t know how to dispose of properly. It’s so great to finally have an option to get rid of them responsibly instead of throwing them by the roadside. This is a really good initiative, and I’m glad Massy is leading the charge.”
The program is not just about proper disposal—it’s also about raising awareness and instilling lasting habits of recycling. The campaign encourages Saint Lucians to “Become Recycling Heros” by joining the community-centered environmental effort and making sustainable choices for the future.
