THE Saint Lucia Labour Party’s (SLP) Walk for Progress is set to take place tomorrow. The SLP says it is an important event that will showcase the government’s commitment to progress in the country.
The walk will start at 2:30 p.m. from the Vigie Playing Field and the SLP leadership is encouraging all supporters, interest groups and individuals to join the walk and show their support for the government’s policies.
Prime Minister Philip J Pierre has emphasized that this march is a physical manifestation of the people’s support for the government and its dedication to addressing various issues in healthcare, sports, education, socio-economic matters, and livelihoods.
According to the SLP, it’s an opportunity to highlight the administration’s achievements and its ongoing efforts to bring about meaningful change and to improve citizens’ lives.
In keeping with its mandate of good governance and accountability, the event is expected to tout the government’s
‘substantial progress’ over the last three years, including an increase in pensioners fees, from $300 monthly to a minimum of $500 for National Insurance Corporation (NIC) pensioners and $725 for government pensioners, effective August 1, 2024.
“We want the people of Saint Lucia to show us …to have a physical manifestation of whether they are in favour of the policies of the government,” PM Pierre told reporters recently, concerning the purpose of this march.
Taking umbrage with some of the measures undertaken by the former United Workers Party (UWP) regime, the SLP’s political leader reiterated his party’s mantra of Putting People First.
Additionally, PM Pierre has ingrained the policy for “wealth creation” among the populace.
The prime minister listed notable achievements, such as the enactment of the Minimum Wage, and other beneficial projects that redounds to the benefit of the people. And included is the Youth Economy Agency (YEA) initiative that has nurtured the developmental and entrepreneurial skills of hundreds of young business-minded persons from across the island.
