THE Orange Grove Plaza was transformed,  on Sunday September 3rd, with tents, feather banners, sports cars, 4×4 offroad vehicles, motorcycles, mobile sound systems, potential 12 second race vehicles and hundreds of motor sport enthusiasts.

This was a deliberate move on the part of the St Lucia Motor Sport Association (SLMSA) in having the motor sporting fraternity come together to a “meet and greet” event. It was also an opportunity to introduce the Executive of the SLMSA and give a brief overview of the plans and objectives of the Association and highlight its accomplishments so far.

Chairman Terroll Compton reiterated the point that “the SLMSA is here to assist and to make what currently exists better.” He went on to say “it is only by working together that most, if not all the challenges of the different motor sporting clubs can be resolved.” He spoke briefly on initial conversations with Pan American Insurance Company in providing insurance coverage to all its members through a group plan. He touched on motor sport Olympics, just to give an insight as to the far-reaching possibilities of motor sports.

Judging from the feedback, the event was thought to be very timely, and persons, especially club members, wanted to see more outings like this. Persons who follow the work of the newly formed executive, embraced the trajectory of the SLMSA, which, according to them, “can only augur well for motor sports in St Lucia”.

In speaking with persons present, especially club members, there appears to be a disconnect between their executive and its membership, when it comes to the plans and objectives of the SLMSA. The Association has already started working on innovative ways of ensuring that information is being disseminated to correct this divide.

By all accounts the “meet and greet” appeared to have achieved its objectives. Plans are already in motion for National Day, Independence and the 2024 season. The SLMSA is very much aware that there is still a lot of work to be done to reach its goals and in an effort to expedite the vision of motor sports in St Lucia, we are reaching out to the lovers of motor sports to email the Association at [email protected] with suggestions and recommendations.

The SLMSA would like to thank the management of Orange Grove Plaza for the use of their compound, the many persons who turned out, our sponsors, Blue Waters, Pan American Insurance, Automotive Arts, Rubis, Invest St Lucia, Ministry of Youth and Sports (Alternative Sports) and St Lucia Environmental.
