Psychosocial, Mental Health Support Systems Team Visits Slain Victim’s Family

ON Sunday, September 10, 2023, a team comprising members of the Community Relations Branch (CRB) of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) Northern and Southern Divisions, officers from the Micoud Police Station, two counselors, and a social worker, paid a visit to the family of the recent homicide victim – Vern Joseph.

This is part of the RSLPF strengthening its use of psychosocial approaches to crime response and management. According to the RSLPF utilizing mental health support systems has proven beneficial in the past, particularly in areas afflicted by gang-related violence.

This initiative intends to engage persons affected by violent crimes, whether they may be the victims, family of the victims, family of the perpetrator(s), and or community members. This has had the effect of not only providing coping mechanisms but also quelling any intentions of revenge while redirecting any criminal intent to a more positive outlook.

The team of professionals was able to aptly address concerns highlighted by the afflicted individuals. Consequent to the visit, the RSLPF has embarked on plans to address Standard Operating Procedures to deal with issues concerning the response to situations involving individuals presenting with mental health concerns. This endeavor will be inclusive of our partner agencies directly responsible for providing care for those affected.
