In last weekend’s soccer action – Soufriere United Senior Women’s Team emerged winners of Saint Lucia Football Association [SLFA] Inc. Senior Women’s Tournament.

The Soufriere lasses earned the distinction as Champions of the inaugural contest for female players on island.

The final preliminary round match played at the Soufriere Mini Stadium on Sunday (March 19) resulted in Soufriere and Canaries playing to a 1-all draw in an intense battle.

Tanika Bernard shot Canaries into the lead in the 47th min to be 1 – 0 at the interval.  However, Soufriere rebounded with Mya Cyril equalising in the 78th minute, with backing from a vociferous and supportive bunch of fans, as the home team got into their stride.

Unable to break the deadlock in this decisive encounter, Soufriere went on to top the tables after playing undefeated throughout the competition.

In the end, Soufriere amassed 19 points, two points ahead of Canaries who finished on 17 points. The National U-20 team finished third on 16 points.

At the post-match presentation, monetary awards were presented as follows:

Soufriere – $6,000,

Canaries – $3,000,

National Under-20 – $2,000.

The tournament’s leading goal scorer was Arnicka Louis of the Under-20 with 22, followed by Chermalyn Albert of Soufriere and Khylah Solomon of Canaries with 12 each.
