On February 13, Saint Lucia will join the international community in the celebration of the 12th edition of WORLD RADIO DAY. The theme for this year’s observance is “Radio and Peace”.
Radio is a powerful medium for celebrating humanity in all its diversity and constitutes a platform for democratic discourse. At the global level, radio remains the most widely consumed medium. This unique ability to reach out to the widest audience means radio can shape a society’s experience of diversity, stand as an arena for all voices to speak out, be represented and heard.
Radio stations should serve diverse communities, offering a wide variety of programmes, viewpoints and content, and reflect the diversity of audiences in their organisations and operations. Indeed, “the power of radio is not that it speaks to millions, but that it speaks intimately and privately to each one of those millions.” (Hallie Flanagan).
The Saint Lucia National Commission for UNESCO invites all radio stations and other media houses to commemorate this important day by organizing special programming to reflect this year’s theme and discuss the significant role that radio has played and continues to play in the development of our nation.
