SLFA Championships Resume This Week

With the festive season out of the way, the St Lucia Football Association [SLFA] Inc. competitions resume in full as players and teams set out for a shot at championship title glory.

Consequently, the 2022/2023 Island Cup District Championship resumes this week, with the schedule as follows:

Tuesday 10th January

Micoud vs. Babonneau – Soufriere Stadium

South Castries vs. Soufriere – Soufriere Stadium

Wednesday 11th January

Dennery vs. Mabouya Valley – D/Seaux Playing Field – 6:15 p.m.

Vieux Fort South vs. D/Seaux – D/Seaux Playing Field- 8:15 p.m.

Thursday 12th January

Central Castries vs. La Clery – Gros Islet Playing Field – 6:15 p.m. (Rescheduled from Wednesday 11 January, 2023)

Gros Islet vs. Vieux Fort North – Gros islet Playing Field- 8:15 p.m.

Meanwhile, seven teams are down to compete in the SLFA Inc. Women’s Football competition, which kicked off late last month.

In the opening round matches Canaries ‘lit up the arena’ with a convincing 11-0 demolition over Dennery. The West-Coast based team went on the rampage with a goal-fest in a match that was tinged with a clinical display.

Kylah Solomon led the charge for Canaries with a beaver- trick with goals in the 27th, 42nd, 43rd and 87th minutes; while Cassandra Shepherd scored a hat trick from 6th, 38th and 55th min. conversions , added to a brace from Tanicka Bernard 17th and 20th minutes and more goals from Steffany Allain 22nd and Krishna Sealy in the 3rd minute.

Defending champions – Vieux Fort South outplayed Desruisseaux 6 – 0. Jerddel Emery converted a brace with goals in the 80th and 90th minutes, while Jahnya Charlemagne 24th, Emasha Nanton 63rd, Freegeanne Joseph 74th and Kisheema Ince in the 76th minute were also on target.

An SLFA official described it as a ‘historic moment’ in that match, “…as for the first time in the annals of St. Lucia Football four female officials carried the game between Vieux Fort South and Desruisseaux.”

The match officials included referee Alvina Francis ably assisted by Irina Wilson, and Niuika Farlane with Kierra Clarke serving as the Fourth Official.

Said the SLFA official, “They must be complimented for their tenacity, interest and dedication to the Sports…congratulations to them all.”
