SLFA Super Cup into Semi-Final Stages

La Clery heads title-contenders for the championship prize

Three teams have so far qualified for the semi-finals of the St Lucia Football Association [SLFA] Inc. Island Super Cup competition.

La Clery, the National U-20, and Vieux Fort North are into the semi-finals, having all completed their allotted eight preliminary round matches. The final preliminary rounds of the Super Cup are down to be completed shortly, before the eventual four title contenders, battle for the championship prize.

La Clery maintained its dominance in the competition to finish undefeated and top the league’s points table. On Wednesday, the suburban Castries side registered a comfortable 2-nil victory over Anse la Raye, at the Dennery Playing Field.

Prolific striker Andrus Remy set up the win with a brace, scoring in the 20th and 77th minutes.

And while the National U-20’s Keegan Caul leads the individual goal scoring with eight conversions; La Clery FC’s Andrus Remy and Jonathan Aliene follow closely with seven goals each. Dilan Lucien and Darrell Francis of Choiseul complete the top goal scorers list with five  goals each.

Interestingly, it was the National U-20s that provided some of the stiffer opposition to La Clery in the preliminary rounds, but the North Castries team overcame their young opponents with a clinical 3-1 victory.

La Clery strode through triumphantly in these initial rounds of the contest to signal their intent, and it is now left to the other title-contenders to make a bid for a shot at the championship prize.

In Wednesday’s other double-header, at the Dennery Playing Field, Laborie nudged past South Castries 2 – 1, with goals from Jaheim Ferdinand and Jason Edwin in the 11th, and 32nd   min respectively. Though South Castries had gone ahead with an early strike from Shawn Mathurin in the 2nd minute, Laborie stormed back to wrench the initiative.

The final matchup between Anse la Raye and Micoud will determine the fourth qualifier, to compete in the semi-finals of the Super Cup.

Resulting from the conclusion of matches, this week, in the Island Super Cup, the points standings are as follows:

La Clery – 24 pts

National U 20 – 17 pts

Vieux Fort North – 15 pts

Micoud -11 pts

Anse la Raye – 10 pts

Laborie – 10 pts.

South Castries – 7 pts

Choiseul – 6 pts

Mon Repos – 0 pts.

Meanwhile, in other local football updates; the SLFA Inc. Free Kick Foundation Under-19 District qualifiers schedule comes off this weekend, March 26 to 27.

Matches will be played simultaneously at the SLFA’s Inc. Technical Centre, namely the Artificial Turf and Grass Field respectively at 2.00 pm. and 4.00 pm. The knockout event will be of 70 minutes duration, and in the event of a drawn match, the issue will be settled through a penalty-kicks tussle.

Micoud Football League vs. Anse la Raye

Mon Repos Football League vs. Soufriere Football League

South Castries Football League vs. La Clery Football League

Choiseul Football League vs. Vieux Fort North Football League

On Sunday, March, 27 – winner # 1 plays against winner #3; while winner #2 takes on winner #4.

Subsequently, the winners from these matches qualify to join the other pre-selected 10 District teams for the Free Kick Foundation Easter weekend competition.

The winner of this competition will then proceed to represent St. Lucia at the inaugural Free Kick Foundation Invitational Cup scheduled for the summer of 2022.

An SLFA official said that more information on the Easter tournament will be made available.
