Like Charity, Concern Also Begins at Home

It is not unusual for persons to pay attention to what is happening outside their home and pay no attention to their own.

We all know that the present focus is on the Russian and Ukraine war and other conflicts happening elsewhere. But while we see home armies defending their turf and their countries with their lives, we pay little attention to the raging war at home against our own people.

Over the last few years, there’s been a group, though young, that have terrorized this country, having people scared to react or fight back. Nobody is saying anything, nobody wants to be associated with the home-front terrorism. We are dying one by one, through drive-by killings or party invasions.

Killings at home now include attacks on Law Enforcement and the situation worsens, but rather than building a defense against our home situation, we are busy giving views on other world conflicts.

Of late, criminal actions are growing by leaps and bounds and we are aware of the consequences, but we care not to take a stand or take things seriously. We continue to make excuses, or trump-up reasons why things are as they are. We even blame unemployment as the reason.

There are several crimes being committed daily, some against gangs, some against our children, some against our women — and in some cases even against our country, because the new national image gives a negative one of this used-to-be Helen of the West.

We keep blaming the government, or the police, for not doing enough, but have we heard lately of any genuine and politically un-connected local pressure group or social enterprise or society group that has stood or is standing against this new crime wave culture that has become our new way of life? We always want some other person to fight our wars, always looking for others to deal with our problems, not realizing that it is our docile attitude that gives rise to this new scourge of violence.

Criminality affects all of us in one way or other, but this hush-mouth culture or don’t tell on our neighbours syndrome, is really why things remain as is.

The problem is further compounded because it is our children who are responsible for this new upsurge in crime and nobody wants to turn against their family or relatives.

It is sad to see the courts system and the legal fraternity all tight-lipped on the matter. There are no public discussions on the subject. The media is all about Zaffaire Moon, but not about speaking on the things that really matter. It is like we are contended to leave things as they are. We do not mind our living conditions, it’s each one for themselves no collective action. But daily we complain, voice our opinion and do what we are best at ‘talk, talk, talk’ and we wait for the next big story to continue to talk.

The questions I ask is how long will we remain in that mode and when will we say ‘enough is enough? When will we demand that drastic action must be taken? When will we stop our children’s negative actions and attitudes?

Well, my guess is as good as yours, and — as per usual — the usual critics will be spinning my wheel to suit their narrative.
