Reports from neighbouirng island, Martinique confirm that during the past week seismic activity is slightly increasing under Mount Pelée.
In the period between January 28, 2022 and February 4, 2022, the OVSM recorded at least 42 volcano-tectonic earthquakes of magnitude less than or equal to 0.1. Deep underground, these low-energy earthquakes occurred between 0.5 km and 1.0 km.
The number of activities increased by five compared to the previous week.
In volcanic edifices, superficial volcano-tectonic seismicity is accompanied by microfractures.
As of February 2, 2022, two long-period earthquakes and one hybrid earthquake (with characteristics intermediate between those of volcano-tectonic and long-period earthquakes) have been detected. The signals are related to the presence of fluids (gas, hydrothermal water) within the volcanic edifice.
The earthquakes were not felt by the population. – RCI Martinique
