Tributes Pour In on the Passing of Former PM of Antigua and Barbuda Sir Lester Bird

On behalf of the U.S. Embassy to Barbados, the Eastern Caribbean, and the OECS, I express our deepest condolences on the passing of former Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda Sir Lester Bryant Bird. We extend our sympathies to the Bird family and to the people of Antigua and Barbuda who are mourning his loss and honouring his memory. As the first chairman of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States, Prime Minister Bird understood the importance of regional integration, and with roots in New York City, the friendship the United States shares with the people of Antigua and Barbuda. May he rest in peace!

OECS Director General Extends Condolences on the Passing of Former Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Sir Lester Bird

The Commission of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) extends sincere condolences to the people of Antigua and Barbuda, and to the family of Sir Lester Bird, who departed this life on August 9, 2021.

Sir Lester Bird, a national hero of Antigua and Barbuda, served as Prime Minister from 1994-2004. He also served as the first Chairman of the OECS in 1982 and served as Chairman for a second time in 1989.

To mark this solemn occasion, the OECS Commission’s flag will be flown at half-mast.

Prime Minister Harris Extends Condolences to the Family and People of Antigua and Barbuda on Passing of its Second Prime Minister

Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris extends condolences to the family and Government and people of Antigua and Barbuda on the passing of its second Prime Minister, Sir Lester Bird.

The national icon passed away in the early hours of Monday, August 9. He was 83 years of age.
In a letter of condolence to the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, the Honourable Gaston Browne, Prime Minister Harris said, “As the second Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Sir Lester Bird was instrumental in modernizing the country, and establishing the foundation for its democratic prosperity.”

Dr. Harris continued, “Throughout the region and internationally, Sir Lester Bird was regarded as a visionary, and he remained a true statesman in service to his people his entire life. His sterling contribution to Antigua and Barbuda and the Caribbean Community is etched in the annals of history, and his presence and voice will be sorely missed.”

The prime minister ended by saying that he joins with the Government and people of Antigua and Barbuda “in mourning a great of the soil and a fitting National Hero.”

A state funeral is being planned for the late Sir Lester Bird.
