Sports and Culture Played Out in FRC 2018 ‘WouleLaba’ Festival at Marchand

A crowd close to 500 spectators was on hand on Sunday 13th October 2018 at the Marchand Grounds to take in the action in this year’s Folk Research Centre (FRC)-sponsored Woulelaba Rama Festival.

In the first quarterfinals between Belfond who had a bye to the second round of competition took on Mon Repos, but the game had to be abandoned by the organisers due to persistent rains which lasted for over an hour.

The match resulted in a no winner; hence the $1,000 prize money at stake for the overall winner was shared among the five remaining teams in the festival.

Nine teams registered for the one-day showpiece these: Balca, Belfond, Barre de Chaussee, Mon Repos, MorneCisseau, City Stars, Ti-Rocher Development Committee Team, Poker Kings and Marchand.

Earlier in the day, results in matches played before the heavy rains came, were in Game One, in which MorneCisseau defeated Balca by 28 runs. Scores: MorneCisseau 103 for 4 in 60 balls; Balca 75 for 3 in 60 balls.

In Game 2, Poker Kings defeated T.D.C.T. by 15 runs. Scores: Poker Kings 75 for 5 in 60 balls and T.D.C.T 60 for 4 in 60 balls.

In Game 3, Mon Repos defeated Monchy by 98 runs. Scores: Mon Repos 158 for 1 in 60 balls and Monchy 60 for 5 in 60 balls.

In Game 4, Barre de Chaussee defeated City Stars by 34 runs. Scores: Barre de Chaussee 90 for 3 in 60 balls and City Stars 56 for 6 in 60 balls.

As fate would have it that Sunday afternoon, the excitement on the pitch was curtailed in mid-afternoon, due to Mother Nature.

But as with all activities planned for ‘MwaKweyol’ (Creole Month), the excitement continued in the cultural field.
