PRESS RELEASE – THE opposition Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) plans to table a motion of no confidence in the administration of Prime Minister Allen Chastanet in parliament, SLP leader, Philip J. Pierre has announced.

“We are preparing the motion and we are going to be sending it to the Speaker and from that point it depends on the Speaker to give us a date to hear the motion,” Pierre revealed.

He said for the motion to succeed, nine MPs must support it.

The current configuration in the House of Assembly is 11 ruling party members to the opposition’s 6.

“All six of us will be voting for the motion,” the SLP leader said of opposition MPs.

“We will leave each minister to his conscience,” he explained in reference to members on the government side of the house.

Pierre spoke at a news conference Wednesday in the aftermath of a massive opposition organised anti-government protest march and rally.

The event was held on Sunday.

Pierre told Wednesday’s news conference that a wide cross-section of the population demonstrated its displeasure with the government in what he described as possibly the largest ever demonstration in this country.

“The next step now is that Her Majesty’s loyal opposition will now use the legal tools that are available to us. We are going to indict the government in parliament,” Pierre stated.

He declared that each of the eleven MPs on the government side will have to stand up and defend the actions of the Allen Chastanet administration.

“The constitution allows that to happen a day after the elections and when people make the false claim that we must give the government a chance – the constitution allows a vote of no confidence one day after the elections. There is no time limit on a vote of no confidence,” the SLP leader explained.

He declared that the no confidence motion was necessary based on the posture and actions of the government.

  1. Common now like you guys have nothing else to do, after that march and all
the noise, placard waving, now to console the frail nerves you come up with
that caper. Who do you think you’re fooling,if it makes you’ll feel good, then o.k.
