DIGICEL has yet again signed another ground-breaking partnership in the world of sports in Saint Lucia.

Last Sunday marked the commencement of the inaugural Digicel Northern Zone Club Championship Tournament, the latest of club structured football added to Saint Lucia’s calendar at the Gros Islet playing field .

The afternoon started with a march-past and opening ceremony with Northern United Club Executive, Sponsors and Parliamentary Representative of Gros Islet and Minister with responsibility for Sports, Lenard “Spider” Montoute.

Once officially declared open, the ceremony was followed by four participating clubs facing off in an exciting double header. Game one saw Big Players Football Club up against Boguis FC while in the second game Northern United took on LA All Stars.

Derek George, Northern United All Stars Sports Club President who declared the tournament open spoke passionately of the club’s drive to restore club football in the community. He remarked: “This tournament has been a long time coming and we are truly excited about today. It is very symbolic for us and your presence here today is also testimony of the value that you see in this too. We would also like to say a huge thank you to Digicel. As the title sponsor of this tournament, Digicel has blown a breath of fresh air into club football and for that we are grateful. The players are excited and ready to vie for the number one spot in the northern zone.”

The teams were met and greeted by Marketing and Communications Executive at Digicel Miss Louise Victor who also delivered remarks at the opening ceremony. “ To all participating clubs we want to wish you the very best throughout this tournament. We undoubtedly saw the potential in this structure of the game to help foster the longevity and holistic development of not just the sport but athletes within the community and by extension Saint Lucia. As Mr. George has already alluded to, club football has been lacking and we have no doubt that our investment will help encourage other clubs to follow Northern United’s example.”

Sunday’s games ended 6-0 in favour of Big Players FC and 1-0 in favour of Northern United.

The Digicel Northern Zone Club Championship tournament will culminate on September 10 where the top two teams will square off for the number one spot.
