THE five St. Lucian athletes to the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil are asked to give of their best in their respective disciplines as the event is set to open next week Friday.
“Generally what we are looking for is improved performances from the athletes. If Leverne Spencer) performs to her best potential she should medal but she has to deliver at the best that she possible can on that day,” President of St. Lucia Olympic Committee, Fortuna Belrose said.
Belrose, who is a Minister in the Ministry of Sports, Culture and Local Government also believes that the country’s star athlete, Spencer, could medal at the games if she performs to her best potential.
“We expect her best performance. As everything else, sports is on the day, the performance is on the hour and we just hope all things work best for her that day so she can deliver the best in her career,” Belrose said.
Spencer is St. Lucia’s most decorated athlete. She is the Caribbean’s premier high jumper and has consistently placed in the top five of several world class competitions.
She will be in action on August 18 as will be JeanelleScheper, the other female high jumper for St. Lucia. They will be part of the St. Lucia team in Brazil comprising Jahvid Best who will compete in the 100m Jordan Augier who will see action in the Men’s 50m freestyle (swimming) and Stephanie Devaux-Lovell, who will take part in the Lasar Radial Sailing event.
“All we are asking from our athletes is their best performance. If they give us their best then they could move to the rounds successfully. We need them to give us their best performances,” she said.
