Kenny and the Politics of Division

THE EDITOR:
SO last week Kenny Anthony announced after 20 years as Political Leader of the SLP and 15 years as Prime Minister that he has a “Vision” for the people of St.Lucia. AFTER 20 YEARS! So has he been governing the party and the country for all these years without a vision?

From the abysmal performance of the economy to the highest rates of unemployment and crime in our history, it would appear so. Things in our country have never been worse, people have never been so desperate, this government has run this country into the ground and now Kenny purports to have a vision? Well, I’ll tell you the vision I think Kenny has: DI-VISION. He can run nothing, can create nothing, can build nothing. He has destroyed everything left to him by Sir John and the UWP. Everything he touches turns to coal. He is the opposite of Midas.

Kenny Anthony in my view, is single-handedly responsible for the red/yellow division which exists in our country. After 1997, when he first became Prime Minister, his first act was to get rid of persons within government whom he deemed to be too close to Sir John. I was at a recent International Women’s Day event and heard the UWP Political Leader recount the indignity our cultural icon Joyce Auguste suffered following that 1997 election and I was reminded of so many others who suffered similar fates – all at the hands of Kenny Anthony and his Labour cronies.

True leadership builds and brings together people. Petty minded simpletons destroy and divide. When have we ever been so divided as a people as we are now? Before 1997 who ever cared which party our friends supported? Sir John’s brother in law was Julian Hunte for heaven’s sake and he never persecuted Mr Hunte, never engaged in personal attacks, never declared “war” on Mr Hunte. But the politics of “us against them” has been the defining feature of Kenny Anthony’s leadership. His legacy is that of division and destruction. He has taken all that is good about our country and turned our people against each other using politics as an excuse. But we are not stupid. No one is buying into this war against the Chastanets. We know what the cause of our suffering is and we know what to do to bring this suffering to an end. Ring the bell, Kenny and you will see OUR vision.
