IT will never end, will it?! The violence…it really will never end. Excuse me if I sound like a fear monger but these days are seemingly apocalyptical as not only is the violence continual, but it is becoming more and more barbaric.
Now I know that I am quick to defend my island home and maintain that it truly is a rare gem in the globe, but I will always call out the bad eggs trying to blacken our image.
One thing is for sure, and I know that the year has just begun, but I’m happy that the gun violence has lessened in the past few weeks and I’d like to think that maybe, just maybe, the gun wielders are beginning to come to their senses (Fat chance though, isn’t it?!)
But can someone tell me where this breed of criminal has come from…what dark sewerage did they crawl from that insists on picking up cutlasses and machetes and hacking other individuals to death?
Whenever I hear about these reports, it brings me back to the morning of 31 year old Howard Pascal of Bois d’OrangeGros Islet who was found lying face down on the Corinth playing field in November of 2012.
This man had been absolutely butchered beyond recognition as attention was specifically paid to his head and all 10 of his fingers severed.
This incident left me traumatised and to this day, I still get shivers down my spine whenever I traverse past that field as I can still see Pascal’s lifeless body lying there.
I mean, take a moment to look at the reality of this “chopping” business…try to imagine what it might be like to…to do…THAT to someone…another human being.
I can’t even imagine doing that to an animal that bit me far less to another person.
And let’s look at it from the victim’s point of view as well…can you imagine having parts of your body hacked off and all attempts to shield yourself are futile as a blade just slices through you like butter?
Imagine your last memories being those of sheer terror and pain.
Then again, I think I just hit the nail on the head as perhaps that’s exactly what the perpetrators are setting out to do: inflict as much pain and fear as they could possibly.
This brings me back to my question asking what breed of criminal is this? What kind of um….. “person” if they could be called that, could do such?
Then I would also like to ask: how do we stop these people? How do we defend ourselves against them? How do we punish them? Because to me these individuals have “burnt heads” and I can’t see logic, remorse or empathy coming from them at all.
There are so many questions in need of action as opposed to answers but I feel like it’s a waste of time even bringing up the topics of solutions as I fear that authorities might just see it as another opportunity to meet up for tea and sandwiches instead of getting down to the nitty gritty and stepping on the neck of our growing crime problem.
Over the years here, I’ve come to the realisation that a new year doesn’t mean a new beginning or change of any sort…heck, if the average person can’t even keep their resolution to start a healthier lifestyle for the own good in the new year, why would hardened criminals decide to put down their weapons and live more honest and peaceful lives?
Also, I won’t hold my breath in wait of any effective solutions from the respective authorities as I’ve come to the realisation that it’s all talk up in the clouds where these people sit.
I’d quicker put my money on seeing Santa Claus come down my chimney than to see these criminals change their ways.
