IT’S amazing how time flies. Tomorrow will see the start of the annual Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC) the largest transoceanic event in the world.

Over 260 boats and 1250 people will take part in this the 30th edition including 40 children aged under 16 in the true spirit of adventure and friendship, setting sail from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 2700 nautical miles across the Atlantic to Island Global Yachting (IGY) in Rodney Bay.

There will be boats from Austria, Germany, Great Britain, France, Belgium, Finland, Malta, Switzerland, Norway, Poland, the Netherlands, USA, Italy, Russia, Canada, Sweden, and Turkey.

Also tomorrow St. Lucians and visitors alike will have their fun as well as the 10th edition of Flotilla will set sail at 10.00 a.m from the Castries Harbour and head up northwards to Rodney Bay located.

It’s not going to be smooth sailing on the Caribbean Sea as the Met Office at Hewanorra International Airport has indicated that seas will be moderate with swells 4 to 6 feet with a gradual increase in wave and swell height expected over the next few days.

Upon going to press last evening there was no final figure as to the actual number of yachts and sea worthy craft participating in this year’s flotilla, but based on last year’s record breaking number of entries and supporters, one expects to see an increase in numbers at the starting line Castries harbour.

Meanwhile, on Sunday November 8 a total of 60 boats set sail for the third ARC+ from Gran Canaria – São Vicente to Saint Lucia.
