Jounen Kweyol In New York

NEW YORK: The New York City-based Saint Lucia Mothers’ Day Committee invites nationals living in or visiting the tri-state area, and all those seeking a unique Saint Lucian cultural experience, to its annual JounenKwéyòl celebration, scheduled for this coming Sunday.

The event will take place at 1193 Dean Street (Corner of Nostrand Avenue), Brooklyn, New York, from Noon until 10:00 p.m..

This year’s festivities will feature performances by the Saint Lucia American La Rose and Solo Group, a fashion show, storytelling and folk dances, and a host of other cultural attractions. Samples of traditional Saint Lucian cuisine and beverages will be offered as well.

Jounen Kwéyòl also offers native Saint Lucians the opportunity to reconnect with their homeland, and acquaint themselves with other expatriate members of the community. Non-natives can get a taste of the island’s rich cultural heritage.

Now in its 20th year, the Saint Lucia Mothers’ Day Committee’s mission aims to keep Saint Lucian identity and history alive in the Diaspora. The organization’s President, Ms.Sherlina Bernard, encourages everyone to attend this year’s activity, as a way of reasserting their national pride and maintain their association with their homeland, calling it “a must-attend event” for Saint Lucians.

Proceeds from this year’s JounenKwéyòl will go to support three worthwhile causes, all directly connected to Saint Lucians: the organization’s scholarship fund for college students of Saint Lucian heritage, Saint Lucy’s Home for the Elderly, and the Cornerstone Humanitarian Society for the Homeless.
