WHAT is wrong with these people in the United Workers Party? Are they secretly conspiring with the Labour Party government to ensure that it remains in power after the next general election.
On Tuesday night we saw Claudius Preville on DBS chiding his party for its silence during last week’s meeting of the House of Assembly to debate the estimates. What does Preville hope to achieve by this? Why is it that he deems it necessary to publicly criticize a party he claims to be a member of? It really does not make any sense, except that it is the intention of Mr.Preville to undermine his party and render it weak when election time comes around.
If Preville or anyone else for that matter has an objection to anything going on in the party why don’t they come to the party and air their views? What is this tendency to air party issues in the media all about? Do we see the SLP doing this sort of foolishness?
St Lucia is going through a dismal period with widespread dissatisfaction with the Labour Party evident all over this island. The people are getting ready to throw out this government whenever the opportunity arises, but yet you have UWP members rocking their own boat and making their party appear divided.
I ask again what is Preville and the others who think like him hoping to gain from this? Are they part of a plot to keep the useless Labour Party on the backs of the people for another five years? I am at a loss to understand the motive for Preville’s outburst except that he wants to harm his own party following in the footsteps of Stephenson King.
These men refuse to accept the will of the party delegates. Both of them were soundly beaten by Allen Chastanet in elections for the party leadership and it appears that both have refused to accept their defeat, blaming Chastanet for losing. So now they are both so peeved that they are doing all in their power to prop up a Labour Party and undermine their own. What a sad story.
The UWP needs to take example from the SLP in that respect. Through all the SLP’s difficulties, the mismanagement that was Rochamel, the corruption that was the NCA, the discontent that followed the introduction of VAT, through the corruption in the STEP programme, and the government’s inability to generate jobs and restore the economy, they have remained solidly united, even though to the detriment of the country. The SLP knows full well that it is in deep trouble with the electorate and that is why it is busy trying to portray Allen Chastanet in bad light, and to entice King. The word in the SLP camp is that King has already switched his political allegiance to Labour. Will Preville follow suit? I say good riddance to both if that is their intention.
It would be a revelation to see King, the champion of the UWP Youth arm, the man handpicked by Sir John Compton, as his successor, wearing a Red Shirt. Amazing isn’t it, that having blown his opportunity to lead the party to what was clearly a victory in 2011, that King would now want to turn on his party because it chose another leader. So Chastanet becomes a scapegoat when everyone knows that King messed up his own golden opportunity all by himself. Also, he has not taken his defeat by Chastanet like a man, so he picks up his marbles and breaks up the game.
The same applies to Preville. Here is another man beaten by Chastanet who has not been able to admit that he was not a viable candidate at the time for the UWP leadership. So what does he do? He takes his party to task in the media, further undermining it.. And there I was proclaiming that Preville was one young man for the future. His integrity and credibility are now both at stake.
Maybe the next time King and Preville decide to make a public statement they should tell us why they are trying so hard to keep the Labour Party in power, a party that has oppressed the people of St Lucia every time it has been in office, oppressed the UWP as well doing everything in its power to win elections. Have King and Preville forgotten the 2011 elections and the alleged SLP victories in Gros Islet and Babonneau? Have they forgotten the Labour Party’s harrassment of the UWP at every turn including in the Courts? Are they aware of the motive behind the present attempt to change electoral boundaries?
It is a sad thing when people have no loyalty to anyone or anything but themselves. It would be interesting to see whether after having ruined St Lucia in so many different ways, promoting disunity, hatred and class warfare, the likes of King and Preville will come out and prop up the Labour Party so it can continue its destructive policies for another five years.
