THREE students from the Vide Bouteille Primary School recently learned that not only is reading fun but also rewarding. They also have a few prizes to prove it.
Towards the end of the last school term, the members of the Vide Bouteille Cultural Club (VBCC) threw out a challenge to the nearby primary school’s Grade Five students. The task was simple: read a book and write a book report on it.
The students were required to read Oliver Twist, Treasure Island or The Jungle Book. They got the chance to read the books during their Christmas vacation. Nine book reports were subsequently shortlisted by their teachers and handed over to the VBCC’s panel of judges.
Stepham Valery’s book report won first place, winning the Kindle Fire HD. Second placer, Kisandre Smith, won a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3, while third placer, ZedadineEuphermand, received a Canon Power Shot A2500.
VBCC’s Public Relations Officer, Elijah Williams, told The VOICE the participating students had no prior knowledge of what the prizes were until the school held its Independence mini-rally on February 20. That was the day when the VBCC members showed up with the prizes, much to the amazement of the winning students. The club, he said, is aiming to continue its corporate social responsibility programme.
Williams said all prizes were sponsored by the VBCC membership.
