THE St. Lucia Chamber of Commerce Industry and Agriculture yesterday warned St Lucians to be prepared for an “imminent” increase in the price of chicken.
The Chamber said it had been informed by its members that the Ministry of Agriculture had advised that effective May 27, importers of chicken would need to satisfy a significantly higher “local purchase requirement” from 25% to 40%.
The Chamber expressed “extreme surprise and concern” with what it said was the manner in which the matter had been handled by the Ministry of Agriculture.
“It is our view, that such an important matter required greater consultation and wider discussion on the current realties of the chicken industry and implications of increasing the quota. The absence of this level of engagement and the resulting decision by the Ministry will have severe implications for the wider society, which could have been avoided”, the Chamber warned.
In light of the decision by the Ministry of Agriculture, the Chamber advised the public, that they should prepare for increases in the price of chicken.
Just do not buy chicken and the price will go down quickly.
