Saint Lucia is actively pursuing home ownership for its citizens, with Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre leading the initiative.
He firmly stated, “Home ownership must be within reach of more Saint Lucians.”
Highlighting the government’s commitment, the Prime Minister noted its “strong track record” in housing and home ownership.
During a recent parliamentary session, he announced a significant EC $54 million housing investment through the Saint Lucia Development Bank (SLDB), aimed at expanding affordable financing options, particularly for low- and middle-income families who often face challenges in accessing traditional mortgages.
“This initiative is about giving ordinary Saint Lucians a fair opportunity to own a home, build an asset, and create greater security for their families,” PM Pierre emphasized.
He reflected on the transformation of individuals previously labeled as “squatters” who are now landowners, thanks to government efforts which included covering legal fees and subdividing land for sale in the Talvan and Babonneau communities.
Additionally, he mentioned that a condominium-type housing project is currently underway in Talvan.
Through the Saint Lucia Social Development Fund (SSDF), millions have been invested in home repairs for the indigent, poor, and low-income individuals.
PM Pierre reiterated that this effort is not a “one-off, one-shot project,” but part of a broader strategy to enhance the housing stock and reduce the housing deficit in Saint Lucia.
Minister for Infrastructure and MP for Dennery South, Sean Edward, emphasized that the program encompasses more than just housing, stressing the importance of a balanced approach to development. He highlighted various infrastructural projects undertaken by the government, including the reconstruction of key roads and facilities such as the Hewanora International Airport, the new Police Headquarters and the Halls of Justice.
Edward noted that true development occurs when there is a delicate balance between investments in infrastructure and social programs that advance the community.
Regarding the management of the $54 million housing initiative, PM Pierre confirmed that it will be overseen by the SLDB, which aims to reduce Saint Lucia’s housing deficit by providing accessible financing options for individuals and families seeking home ownership.
Since the housing project launched in 2024, the government has also facilitated home purchases for public servants by waiving stamp duties on the first $400,000 of residential loans and offering a $1,000 grant to assist with legal fees.
This initiative is part of the Government of Saint Lucia’s broader strategy to address housing needs and promote a more equitable and prosperous nation.
