For the girls of Babonneau, September 26th was more than just a day on the field—it was a chance to discover the joy of football, learn new skills, and imagine where the game could take them.
The Saint Lucia Football Association Inc. (SLFA), in collaboration with the Babonneau Football League, hosted a vibrant Girls’ Football Festival at the Babonneau Playing Field, bringing together young players for a day of learning, inspiration, and fun.
In preparation, League President Mr. Sidoine, along with SLFA representatives, Ms. Philbert and Ms. Krysan St. Louis, engaged principals and PE teachers from six primary schools—La Guerre, Boguis, Des Barras Combined, Babonneau, Balata, and Fond Assau. Their discussions centered on encouraging girls to embrace football and building community support for the sport’s growth.
The festival opened with remarks from President Sidoine and the Honourable John Estephane, who praised the girls for their enthusiasm and participation. This was followed by an educational session led by Krysan St. Louis, who conducted a brief PowerPoint presentation focused on the opportunities available to girls through sport, highlighting that football can provide opportunities both on and off the field.
Adding inspiration, Kayla Polius, Saint Lucia’s Junior Female Footballer of the Year, urged the girls to “stay humble, work hard, and believe that one day they can represent their country.”
The festival featured a range of practical football activities to introduce and develop
fundamental skills. From dribbling and passing to shooting, ball control, and coordination drills, the girls immersed themselves in practical activities before taking part in small-sided matches that showcased their newfound skills.
The day concluded with closing remarks from SLFA President Lyndon Cooper and Technical Director Miran Louis, who outlined the Association’s vision: sustained participation, structured player development, and a clear pathway into organized competition. The ultimate goa is the formation of a strong Babonneau U13 Girls’ Team to compete in the SLFA Girls’ U13 Competition.
Phase Two of the programme will target at least 25 girls for retention, ensuring that the momentum built at the festival translates into lasting opportunities for young female players.
