In celebration of World Oral Health Day 2026, the La Clery Dental Clinic organized a Health Expo tailored specifically for expectant mothers at the Vide Boutielle Community Centre in La Clery.
The event gathered pregnant women from the local community for an engaging day of health education, presentations, and discussions, all emphasizing the significance of oral health during pregnancy and the early stages of a child’s life.
Dental Hygienist Germaine Gyan, representing the La Clery Dental Clinic, highlighted that the initiative aimed to provide expectant mothers with practical knowledge to maintain good oral health for themselves and their babies.
“We offered health education for both mothers and their babies, focusing on what pregnant women need to do to remain healthy, which in turn promotes the health of their babies,” Gyan explained.
She further noted, “We emphasized the importance of good dental hygiene. For instance, in a skit, a mother suffering from an abscess expressed her pain. We reminded them that regular tooth cleaning can prevent such issues, ensuring they don’t experience sleepless nights due to dental pain. This message is crucial for everyone, but especially for pregnant women.”
Participants also learned about essential practices for keeping their babies healthy, including proper nutrition and hydration.
Sierra Augustin, an expectant mother who attended the event, shared her thoughts on the valuable information presented at the Dental Health Expo.
“It exceeded my expectations. The presentations were excellent, and the team worked incredibly well together,” she said. “As a first-time mom, I learned a lot of new information that I hadn’t known before. The dedication of the team was impressive, and I hope they organize similar events more frequently for pregnant mothers.”
The Ministry of Health, Wellness, and Nutrition continues to endorse oral health as a fundamental aspect of preventive healthcare in Saint Lucia, acknowledging that healthy teeth and gums are vital for overall well-being at every stage of life.
