UK Implements Visa Restrictions for Saint Lucian Travellers

.

Saint Lucian nationals traveling to the United Kingdom (UK) will soon face new visa requirements, as the UK government tightens its entry rules.

Effective March 5, 2026, Saint Lucians will be required to obtain a visa to enter the UK, including for direct airside transit.

This decision, announced by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, aims to address concerns about rising numbers of Saint Lucians entering the UK and subsequently applying for asylum.

“Their visa-free entry has created a back -door into our country,” she stated in a press conference.

According to the correspondence from the UK Home Office dated March 4, 2026, the changes are part of a larger effort to enhance border management and respond to pressures on the UK’s immigration and asylum systems.

The new visa requirement also reflects a notable increase in asylum claims from Saint Lucians, with many applications being refused.

Simon Mustard, British High Commissioner to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, reiterated that, starting March 5, 2026, an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) will no longer be sufficient for travel. He emphasized that the UK is taking steps to protect its borders due to actions by a minority, which have resulted in significant impacts on asylum processes.

He asserted , “This change follows a significant rise in the number of asylum claims from Saint Lucian nationals, most of which have been refused.  The actions of a minority have required the UK to take steps to protect the integrity of its borders.”

A six-week transition period will be in place until April 16, 2026, during which Saint Lucians holding an ETA and booked travel before the policy changes can enter the UK visa-free if they arrive before the end of this period.

Despite these new regulations, Mustard conveyed that Saint Lucia remains a close and valued partner of the UK. On-going diplomatic dialogues focus on addressing shared challenges, including narcotics trafficking and climate change.

The Government of Saint Lucia recognizes the potential impact of this policy on its citizens, particularly those travelling for family visits, business, education, or tourism. It assures the public that active discussions with UK authorities are on-going, aimed at seeking clarity on this decision and exploring options for maintaining strong mobility arrangements between the two nations.

Further guidance on visa application procedures and travel requirements will be provided to the public as more information becomes available.
