Denver Rides Triumphantly in Martinique Road Race

Young Saint Lucian star cyclist Denver Alphonse Jr. recently showcased his talent by clinching 1st place in the Under-23 category of the Challenge Des Presidents de Clubs road cycling race in Martinique.

Riding for ASC Karaïbes Culture Sports, Denver finished 21st overall in the challenging 132-kilometre race but stood out as the top rider in his age group, marking a significant achievement for Saint Lucia in international youth cycling. This performance underscores Denver’s growing prominence on both the Caribbean and global cycling stages.

Competing in his second race of the 2026 cycling season, he is transitioning into the Under-23 category in what is his first year as a senior cyclist. The race, held on the Riviere Salee circuit, was a demanding seven-lap contest along the Rivière Salée-Old Medecin road, with 50 registered riders.

Denver completed the race in 3:33:35, finishing 12 minutes and 14 seconds behind the winner, Edwin Nubul.

After the race, Denver commented on the conditions: “They were okay. I started at roughly 31 to 32 kilometers per hour, so it was very easy to stay in the peloton. All I needed to do was make sure I was in the first 13, so that if a breakaway occurred, I could respond.”

Denver’s impressive performance is attributed to his thorough preparation, aided by local coaches Chester Forde, Leo Serieux, and the invaluable support of Alex Noreskal from KCS.

Looking ahead, Denver is set to compete again this weekend, February 21 and 22, in the Dossier De Course Milleco Shop 2026, which includes both road racing and time trials in Martinique.

His rising star has not gone unnoticed; last week, he was recognized as a nominee in the Junior Sportsman category at the 44th National Sports Awards function, further highlighting his impact in the regional and international cycling scene.
