September 27 has been declared Julien Alfred Day, a special day set aside by the government to honour Julien Alfred’s remarkable achievements at the recently concluded Paris Olympics.
Prime Minister Philip J Pierre announced on Monday that the Planning Committee has organized a series of activities to celebrate the occasion. Alfred will be on the island from September 24 to 29, and various events will be held in her honour throughout her stay.
Alfred showcased her exceptional talent by winning a gold medal in the 100 meters and a silver medal in the 200 meters.
Youth Development and Sports Minister Kenson Casimir mentioned that the committee has been meeting frequently to plan a grand event for Julien’s homecoming. He added that many citizens and groups have submitted suggestions and proposals for the celebration.
Dr. Uralise Delaire, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sports and a member of the Planning Committee, provided an update on the planned activities. Alfred will receive an official VIP welcome at Hewanorra International Airport on September 24. She will then travel along the East Coast to greet fans and supporters before heading north.
On September 25, two school rallies will be held in the western and eastern communities at the Soufriere Mini Stadium and the La Ressource Playing Field. Alfred will also visit the Ciceron Primary School, her former elementary school, to ‘rekindle the flame.’ Parliamentary Representative for Castries South, Dr. Ernest Hilaire, and the community’s organising committee have planned various activities, including the unveiling of a mural in her honor.
On that day, 1st National Bank, a long-time corporate sponsor of Julien Alfred, will also host activities to celebrate her accomplishments.
Organisers have planned a grand National Concert for September 27 and are urging citizens to turn out in large numbers to support the event. They encourage everyone to “bring along the children, bring along the entire family and let’s make it a National Event…where the best of Saint Lucia will be on show, showcasing all of Saint Lucia’s culture.”
The National Concert, a free event, will be held at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground (DSCG). Dr. Delaire invites “all Saint Lucians to come out and support the activities…let’s show our solidarity, our love for the sport, for Julien, and for Saint Lucia.”
Dr. Delaire also mentioned that starting this week, the entire route across the island will be adorned with posters and other paraphernalia to celebrate Julien’s historic achievements.
Julien is particularly excited about interacting with children, young people, and older folks. She will have the opportunity to deliver speeches at various events, as the country eagerly anticipates participating in the grand celebrations to honour its beloved star athlete.
