WHEN we listen to the statistics on criminality on our island, it frightens us and I wonder if all that we can do has been done, or we just stick our heads in the sand like an ostrich and conclude that this is the sign of the times, as taught during our Christian upbringing.
If a faction of the society chooses to live like rebels and follow a dog-eat-dog philosophy and determine that vengeance is theirs and the motto is tit-for-tat, then we, as a sane society, have two choices: either we go with the flow, or resist that concept.
As we talk about the year of infrastructure, should we not also include a new and sizable jail house, to ensure that as we find criminals guilty, we can ensure that due punishment is served.
In the same way that criminals think they are justified in their actions, we the society should adopt a contrary opinion and have the same hardline approach that if you can do the crime, you should do the time.
There is no evidence at this present point in time to suggest that there will be a decrease in criminal behaviour, so we, as a nation and a society, should not burden ourselves with the guilt that makes us sorry and sympathetic.
Parents seem to think that the system is harsh and should be more accommodating and forgiving, and accept their children’s behavior as normal.
Meanwhile the whole country is aching, our reputation on the international frontier is in question and safety from such behavior is questionable.
Then there is the situation of the next generation, or the little ones growing-up mimicking what they see, having some children beginning to think it is ok to adopt that lifestyle.
Richness should not be attained by any means, as wrong can never be right and forgiveness should only be dished out to the converted.
Young or old, poor or rich, criminals should be brought to justice and if found guilty, be made to pay for their actions, as we can’t sacrifice the gains of yesteryear on the basis that this Is how the world has become.
We need to offer options through opportunities to give all the necessary support that we can but if all fails and the choice is being a bad boy or girl or a renegade survivor, then let the chips fall where they should.
The behavior of a few should not be used as a yardstick for progress and those employed to deal with the problem have to step-up their game. The way I see it, if you slip you slide and if you choose to be wayward, then you face the consequences of your actions.
It should never be them or us, because we should be living by certain principals, accepting that evil doings should be condemned and safety for all should be a policy for living.
Freedom of choice I do agree with, but we also should have freedom of condemnation.
No two wrongs can make a right. If you don’t nip it at the bud and be defiant today, then our tomorrow will be of our own doing.
We need to call a spade a spade and not make excuses for the behavior of the unruly.
Now even on our roads are safe, as people have now become rouges on the streets – and with no consideration, no courtesy, no respect, no rules and no respectable behavior. So, big question is: Do we simply continue to live in fear, indefinitely?
