St. Lucia’s Ace High Jumper Clears 1.94m. At Pan Am Games.
ST. LUCIA is on the medals table at the Pan Am Games in Toronto, Canada and it should come as no surprise to sports enthusiasts that it is one of the island’s most decorated athlete Levern Spencer making history once again in the high jump.
Spencer who turned 31 last month also recently qualified for the IAFF World Championships scheduled for Beijing, China next month and the Rio Olympics 2016.
Here’s how it went down – The competition began at 1.70 metres, but Spencer did not enter until the 1.80 metre mark, which she cleared on the first attempt. By that time, Monica De Freitas (Brazil), Deandra Daniel (Trinidad and Tobago) and Kashany Rios (Panama) had already been knocked out.
Spencer further went on to clear 1.85 metres and 1.88 metres on her first attempt along with Pricillia Frederick (Antigua and Barbuda), Akela Jones (Barbados), Maya Pressley (USA) and JeanelleScheper (St.Lucia) to round off the top five.
At 1.91 metres, it was crunch time among Spencer, Antigua and Barbuda’s Frederick and Barbados A Jones for the title as both Pressley and Scheper failed at 1.91m.
At 1.94 Levern missed on her first and second attempt, so did Frederick and Jones. But the St. Lucia’s bronze medallist at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow cleared on her final attempt leaving Frederick and Jones to settle for the silver and bronze respectively as they missed all three trials at 1.94m.
Spencer, had won a bronze medal at the Pan Am Games in Rio in 2007. She has alse won gold at the 2010 and 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games.
For the records – She competed in high jump at Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Olympic Games. Competed at Santo Domingo 2003 and Guadalajara 2011 Pan Am Games, Bronze in high jump at Rio 2007 Pan Am Games.First in high jump at 2010 and 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games. Third in high jump at 2010 and 2014 Commonwealth Games and Competed in high jump at 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013 IAAF athletics world championships.
