The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) has become aware of information currently in circulation regarding an assault on police by civilians during a recent operation in Vieux Fort. As a result, we wish to provide some clarifications that will put the matter into proper context. These are the facts:
On the evening of Saturday, February 24, 2024, around 7:00 p.m., officers from the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) were engaged in standard patrol operations in Bruceville, Vieux Fort. In the course of their duties, they performed routine searches on a number of individuals, though these searches did not yield any illegal items. As the officers were leaving the area, an individual threw a bottle that struck one of the vehicles in their convoy. This incident was formally reported, and there are plans to return to the scene for further investigations and to make arrests if necessary.
Despite some expressions of dissatisfaction from those subjected to searches, the situation never escalated beyond the control of our officers. The team on duty, skilled in handling potential conflicts, were fully prepared for any aggression that might have arisen. Moreover, they were equipped to de-escalate the situation effectively, had it been required. Efforts are underway to prevent such incidents in the future and to ensure that those responsible are held accountable under the law.
Let me take this opportunity to caution those who believe that they may dare in any way to threaten the safety of officers in the execution of their duties. Officers are fully aware of the dangers of policing however; such nuisances are avoidable and I would advise that such risks not be taken by members of the public.
We want to reassure the public of our unwavering dedication to reducing crime and enhancing safety for our citizens. While our efforts to secure the community might occasionally cause minor inconveniences, these are short-term measures aimed at achieving a significant reduction in criminal activities in the long term.
We also seize this moment to promote a constructive dialogue between the police force and the media, to guarantee that the information shared with the public does not empower criminal elements or spread misinformation. The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force appreciates the media’s role in fostering a safer environment in Saint Lucia and is committed to maintaining open lines of communication, which are vital for informing the public and strengthening police-community relations.
Finally, we extend our gratitude to the community for supporting our intensified operations across the island. Our commitment to restoring peace and ensuring public safety remains steadfast, and we will continue our efforts to ensure that law and order prevails.
