Media Pros At Climate Change Workshop

MEDIA and communications professionals across the OECS participated in a two-day symposium last week, in Saint Kitts.

The symposium, an activity under the public awareness component of the OECS Rallying the Region for Action on Climate Change (RRAC) project, discussed ways in which communications professionals can provide effective communication on climate change.

Lester Arnold, Project Coordinator of the RRAC Project, said the conference was historic and timely.

He said: “This symposium is the first of its kind in the OECS and also for the RRAC project. We saw the need to host this symposium especially targeted at media and communications personnel in recognition of the challenges faced in communicating climate change issues. We all know that climate change is a very technical and scientific one which is not easily communicated, and needs to be broken down at all levels in order for people to understand.”

Communications Specialist for the RRAC Project, TeclaFontenard, said the conference was expected to yield specific results.

These included developing a practical list of important features, critical elements and characteristics of good climate change communicators for use in the future design of climate change communication strategies; compiling a list of climate change resources; and formulating a set of recommendations for future activities that will build on the synergies and potential partnerships among participants.
