A Closely Contested Opening Day Sets the Pace in Martinique
The opening day of the CARIFTA Aquatics Championships 2026 concluded on Saturday evening at the Pierre Samot Aquatic Centre, marking a strong start to the region’s premier junior competition, with high-level performances and tightly contested team standings.
Minimal Gap Between Leading Nations
At the end of Day 1, the Bahamas lead the combined team standings with 196 points, closely followed by Jamaica with 191 points, a gap of just five points .
According to Baptiste Degrace, Head of Delegation for Martinique, this narrow margin reflects the expected balance between the two leading nations:
“The gap is very small — it does not represent much at this stage. It is likely to come down to these two teams and remain close until the end.”
Behind them, the race for third place is also highly competitive. Trinidad & Tobago (152 points), Barbados (150), and the Cayman Islands (145) remain within close range after the first day of competition .
Strong Individual Performances Across the Region
The first finals highlighted several notable individual performances from across the Caribbean.
Liam Carrington of Trinidad & Tobago won the 50m freestyle and also secured a podium finish in the 100m butterfly. The butterfly event was won by Haiti’s Christian Jérôme, who had been identified as a leading contender in that discipline.
In the women’s events, Heidi Stoute (Barbados) delivered a strong performance, while Reagan Uszenski (U.S. Virgin Islands) stood out among the younger swimmers.
Sapphire Parks of Saint Lucia also delivered a remarkable performance, competing in three events and winning two, while placing third in the other.
Results That Reflect Both Expectations and Opportunities

Several results aligned with expectations, while others contributed valuable additional points to team totals.
Among them:
• Jade Bering won gold in the 200m breaststroke
• Malia Soroman secured bronze in the 100m butterfly
• Lucas Patron earned silver in the 200m breaststroke
• Lucas Wato claimed bronze in the 50m backstroke
Commenting on these outcomes, Degrace noted:
“These are medals we hoped for rather than fully expected. These additional points are important and can make a difference in the overall standings.”
Relay Events Highlight Team Cohesion
The day concluded with relay events across multiple age categories, where teams demonstrated strong collective performances.
Notably, positive results were recorded in the boys 13–14 and girls 15–17 categories.
“I have a motivated and united team. This is also important in managing a competition,” Degrace added.
Competition Remains Wide Open
This opening day confirmed both the level of competition and the narrow margins separating the leading teams.
With several nations still within close range in the standings, the CARIFTA Aquatics Championships 2026 remain highly open as the competition continues in the coming days.
