Time to brace for an economic hurricane

In our creole humour, we are reminded of the creole phrase ‘Lakatan ka tann may ou paka tann?’ — simply meaning that despite what you hear and see about what is going on worldwide, you seem not to care.

In our world and in this island of ours, we think first about the I, but not about we, or us. But events that are beginning to unfold in certain parts of the globe ought to make us rethink our safety and our direction.

Our ‘Doh Dig Nutting’ attitude and our famous quotation of ‘It will be alright in the morning’ seem to set us apart, but the way things are unfolding, we will soon lose our comfort zone when the cost of living and survival, as we know it, may climb beyond our expectations.

The gasoline and cooking gas that we need for our daily living, or lifestyle, may soon be priced above our means. The foods we frequently consume from our supermarket shelves also may be priced above our financial means.

Thousands of legitimate medium small and overnight micro businesses will not lower the cost of their items to accommodate your situation, or plight, because they too have to face the higher prices.

In other words, we all will be in the same shit together.

The high-rollers of this world are gambling with our lives and sadly, we still support them with all our hearts.

In the President of America’s quest to Make America Great Again, the rest of us who are non-American or not supporting America will all feel the squeeze.

We have adopted a lifestyle of living like the Joneses and behaving like things can only get better because America is our friend. We think England is our Motherland, or France is our past Fatherland and our old colonial masters will  help our cause if there is a crisis.

But I would like to suggest to most of you that if we do not help ourselves in this crisis, as the old saying goes, ‘Crappo will smoke our pipe.’

Nobody wants to go back to the past, or, as we say Back to Eden. We are too advanced to consider basic living, planting what we eat, or eating what we grow. We think all that is beneath us.

We hear of water shortages or woes, but will not consider harvesting whatsoever little rain water that falls. For us, its WASCO water, or bottled water, or nothing.

The few rivers that still flow we continue to clog-up with our garbage and the money we earn daily is used for material glamour, rather than investing for our human survival.

We think that we should all be favoured, that we are the good guys, that we are a loving and praying people and God will be there to guide us despite our sinful lifestyle.

Today, world leaders and some very interesting and influential personalities are all accused of child molestation and sex trafficking scandals. World leaders are investing in weapons rather than finding means to stop hunger, or lower the cost of living.

We are being poisoned by the industrial world and having to pay a high cost to deal with our health issues. Our children have become wayward, uncaring rogues, selfish and in most cases not caring about anything, yet we sit back and smile at the situation rather than deal with the issues.

The code for the day is money, money, money — get it or earn it by any means necessary, even if you have to dine with the Devil to obtain it.

A lot is crumbling around us but some are or play too blind to see.

So many read and don’t understand, listen but don’t hear, so many look but do not see and due to our egos and self-esteem and our philosophical concept of who we think we are, a lot passes us, but we are just not aware.

We lack spiritual strength and humanistic values, we care less about each other, we behave like every man is an island, but woe be to all the unbelievers — too late shall be your cry and by the time you realize what is really going on, it just may be too late.

So, if the captain of the ship is going the wrong way and you notice, it’s time to bail out or suffer the consequences.

Remember the story of Sodom and Gomorrah: when all perished but the righteous, or the story of Noah and the Flood again only the righteous were saved.

These may just be stories, but it should guide your understanding. Why? Because not-even AI will be there to support or save you. Technology is the greatest retardation of human values, but sadly, too many of us are taking too long to realize just how much it’s taken over our brains — and our lives.

All that is until, like I said earlier, according to the Bajan Spouge song, ‘Too Late Shall Be Your Cry!’
