Saint Lucia faced a tough challenge on Monday in Group A of the 2025/26 Concacaf W Qualifiers, suffering a 7-0 defeat against Mexico at the Daren Sammy Cricket Grounds (DSCG).

Following the match, the technical team is taking a critical look at their strategies based on the lessons learned from this encounter.
Head Coach Franklin Mac Donald acknowledged that Saint Lucia employed a strong defensive approach against the more highly skilled Mexican squad. Despite the loss, he remains optimistic about the team’s future prospects as they prepare for upcoming matches in the tournament.
Saint Lucia entered the game with determination but conceded two goals in the first half. Mexico’s relentless pressure in the second half led to an additional five goals, showcasing their superior stamina and experience compared to the younger home team.

From the outset, Mexico tested Saint Lucia’s defensive resilience, dominating the opening sessions and pushing deep into the defense. The home team managed to advance past Mexico’s half-line only twice in the first half, emphasizing the challenge they faced against the South American side.
Rebeca Bernal opened the scoring for Mexico with a header in the 18th minute, followed by Charlyn Corral’s right-footed shot doubling the lead in the 26th minute.
An own goal by Ellaisa Marquis in the 52nd minute further extended Mexico’s advantage, and Corral secured her brace with a goal in the 64th minute. Alexia Delgado added a fifth in the 69th minute, while Nicolette Hernandez and Diana Ordonez capped off the scoring with goals in the 87th minute and stoppage time, respectively.
Mexico is looking to continue its winning streak against the U.S. Virgin Islands on April 11, while Saint Lucia will face Saint Vincent and the Grenadines in their next match on April 19.

Despite the scoreline, Saint Lucian goalkeeper Renala Francis was tested throughout the match and made several bold saves. Unfortunately, two critical errors—one a simple blunder and another an own goal—provided Mexico with additional scoring opportunities.
Coach Mac Donald noted that while the Piton Girlz showed a commendable level of fitness in the first half, their performance faltered in the second half. He stated, “In the second half, our concentration level dipped. We couldn’t maintain it, which opened gaps for Mexico and created space that led to the goals.”
He added, “We made simple mistakes that cost us goals in the goalkeeping department, and that weighed on us. There was high performance in the first half, but we weren’t able to maintain that intensity in the second half.”
As the team moves forward, the focus will be on addressing these issues and improving their performance for future matches.
In evaluating his team’s performance during the match against Saint Lucia’s tactically defensive strategy, Mexico’s head coach, Pedro Lopez, applauded their offensive efforts and adaptability, which ultimately led to a well-deserved victory.
Reflecting on the skill set of the Piton Girlz, Lopez remarked, “When it comes to Caribbean teams, we’ve observed numerous matches involving Saint Lucia. In every game, they’ve shown significant improvement and evolution.”
He continued, “Their game plan was effective and strategically sound. It’s clear they intended to challenge us in that way, and this indicates that if they continue to invest in and develop their team, they will maintain their strong performance in Caribbean competitions.”
Lopez’s insights underscore the growing competitiveness among teams in the region, emphasizing the importance of continuous development for success.
