This year’s media launch for the Lucian Carnival festivities presented a delightful surprise for the enthusiastic audience gathered at The Pavilion in Rodney Bay.
Attendees were treated to an impressive showcase of Lucian culture; in anticipation of the grand event which runs from July 1 to 22.
A notable highlight was the Tribute to Lucian Carnival Legends, which honored the invaluable contributions of figures such as Antonius “Secra” Gibson, Gregory “Shinning” Emmanuel, Jah T, Dylan Pitcarin, and the supportive corporate sponsor Heineken Saint Lucia.
Additionally, a documentary title – The Economic Pulse debuted, exploring the “real heartbeat” of carnival, while The Carnival Couch featured an interactive interview segment with key influencers on the carnival scene.

Host Melissa Giddings passionately described Lucian Carnival celebrations as “something even more powerful; an entire ecosystem of people and industries whose livelihoods are connected to this festival.”
The opening act featured a dynamic collaboration of top local soca artists, delivering an electrifying performance, which set the tone for other magnificent cultural and musical performances that followed.
In highlighting the economic significance intertwined with the arts and creativity of the July festival, Minister for Tourism and Creative Industries Dr. Ernest Hilaire stated, “Carnival helps define who we are as a people and how it brings us together to celebrate life; a display of creativity that defines us as West Indians and Saint Lucians.”

He emphasized the carnival’s role as a major tourist attraction, second only to jazz, and noted that visitors described the Lucian Carnival experience as “amazing,” with nearly 80% expressing a desire to return.
Dr. Hilaire reported that approximately 40,000 visitors attended the carnival festivities last year, and he anticipates even higher numbers this time around.
Additionally, he revealed that this year’s recognition will extend to the musical arrangers and producers, following last year’s acknowledgment of songwriters.
Tamara Gibson, Chairperson of the Carnival Planning and Management Committee (CPMC), expressed pride in the talent showcased at the launch.

“The energy, talent, and culture on display reminded us that Lucian Carnival is not just another festival; it is a powerful reflection of the creativity and spirit of the Saint Lucian people.”
Gibson emphasized the importance of honoring those who have shaped the festival, stating, “Carnival is not just about these celebrations; it is about the shoulders we stand on and the legacy we carry forward.”
She also highlighted the committee’s focus this year on nurturing youth talent to become future cultural leaders.
Furthermore, Gibson affirmed that the carnival festivities generate revenue, benefiting artisans, costume designers, band leaders, entrepreneurs, vendors, and members of the community.
Ultimately, the recurring theme portrayed the Lucian Carnival experience as more than just a movement; it embodies the voices, artistry and creativity of the people who energize the festivities.
