Residents of Laborie are beaming with delight due to the commencement of work on the fencing of the playing field which is near completion.

According to the residents, who say they are eagerly awaiting the work to be completed, such a project is long overdue.

They are heaping praise on their District Representative, Alva Baptiste, for undergoing such an initiative, which they say will keep the playing field secure, and allow sporting activities to take place without unnecessary stoppage.

The Laborie Playing Field, which is located near the beach, over the years had the semblance of a pasture.

During sporting activities on the field, games sometimes had to be halted to allow vehicles and pedestrians to traverse the field and balls retrieved from the sea.

A road is currently being constructed next to the playing field to allow vehicles and pedestrians to traverse the area.

Speaking to multiple residents of the community, they said they welcome the initiative. However, a few who also support the project, felt that there should be consultation on the matter.

A few residents expressed concern that a few trees next to the playing field were cut down to facilitate the construction of the road, however, inquiries by this reporter revealed that trees will be replanted along various parts of the beach to replace those destroyed.

Shirley Geroge, a resident of Laborie, who vends at the playing field during sporting activities, said she is delighted that the playing field is being fenced.

“The field had to be fenced. It needs to be secured. Animals were always crossing the field during sporting activities,” she said.

According to George, the playing field has been abandoned for years, and someone can easily be injured by vehicles and animals while a game is in progress.

Melania Theodore said there is nothing to complain about regarding the project.

“I support the fencing of our playing field,” she said, adding that some people don’t know what they want.

According to her, all Laborians should support the project, which will go a long way in the development of sports in the community.
