Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre has underscored the importance of kitchen gardens as a crucial strategy for enhancing food security.
By promoting local food production, reducing dependence on imports, and fostering self-sufficiency, this initiative aims to empower citizens and strengthen the nation’s resilience.
The Prime Minister advocates for the reintroduction of household and community gardening, supported by initiatives such as national seed distribution programs. This effort not only provides sustainable food sources but also enhances educational opportunities through school agriculture programs, which help instill long-term resilience in the country’s food systems.
In addressing the public, PM Pierre expressed the necessity for citizens to adopt a healthy lifestyle, emphasizing the significance of food security in his statements.
“In the upcoming budget presentation, we will propose several measures to encourage a return to the kitchen garden concept,” he declared confidently during a recent media briefing.

He reiterated that establishing kitchen gardens, or backyard gardens, is essential for providing food for families and called for a shift in how citizens plan, grow, and consume food.
The Prime Minister noted that practical actions, like reintroducing kitchen gardens and strengthening school agriculture programs, can significantly enhance national resilience.
With realistic planning and simple lifestyle adjustments, Saint Lucia can improve its capacity to be self-sufficient and lessen reliance on external supply chains.
“This is about sustainability, self-reliance, and long-term stability for our people,” he asserted. “We must undergo a mental shift; we have the power to enact these changes ourselves through simple lifestyle choices.”
PM Pierre concluded with a strong message: “We must assess our strengths and realistically consider what is achievable. We have the capacity to feed ourselves; we will not give up or settle for inaction.”
