Girls’ Under-13 Football Tournament Kicks Off

The Canaries Playing Field came alive last Saturday with the official launch of the Saint Lucia Football Association (SLFA) Inc. Under-13 Girls’ Football Championship. The opening fixture between Canaries and Dennery delivered a feast of skill, determination, and youthful passion for the sport.

One player immediately stamped her mark on the tournament, netting a hat trick that electrified the match and set the tone for what promises to be an exciting competition.

The launch was attended by SLFA President Lyndon Cooper, General Secretary Victor Reid, players, and a small group of spectators. While the stands were disappointingly sparse, the event marked a significant step forward for the SLFA’s grassroots programme aimed at encouraging girls to embrace football. It was a milestone for girls’ football.

National women’s team captain Racquel John, who delivered the vote of thanks, praised the young athletes for their grit and discipline. And true to her words, the girls showcased not only skill but also sportsmanship, exchanging handshakes at the final whistle.

The opening encounter ended in a thrilling 3–3 draw, the six goals underscoring the depth of talent on display.

Canaries struck first, with Dreamer Longville scoring in the 14th minute and Oneal Clarke adding another in the 54th.

Dennery responded after halftime with a spirited comeback, led by Faye Alphonse, who dazzled with three goals in quick succession (38th, 40th, and 45th minutes).

The transformation of the Dennery side after the break left their opponents scrambling, and the second half was packed with excitement.

In his remarks, Cooper reaffirmed the SLFA’s dedication to creating opportunities for girls at every level of the game and a commitmment to their growth.

“We want to re-confirm, we pledge our commitment that whatsoever we do we are going to do it in the best interest of you, the players,” Cooper said.

That commitment has already borne fruit, with Saint Lucia’s women’s national team competing admirably in regional and international tournaments.

This year’s championship features eight teams vying for top honours. If the opening clash is any indication, the tournament will be a showcase of emerging talent and a celebration of the growing passion for girls’ football across the island.

Meanwhile, The SLFA Inc. Boys Under 12 District League football competition powered by the Ministry of Education, Youth Development and Sports, and Digital Transformation National Lotteries Authority, ACADO, TOGS and Taxi continued on Saturday 7th February.

In the lone encounter at the Grande Riviere Playing Field in Gros Islet, Babonneau with a brace from Leshawn Gordon a penalty in the 22nd minute and the other in the 35th minute defeated La Clery 2 – 0.

Down at the Technical Centre in Grande Riviere Dennery, Dennery opened their campaign with a 5 – 0 victory over Vieux Fort North with a hat trick from Devine Ashale 28th, 41st and 47th minute. and a brace from Tranzie Donai 11th & 22nd minute.

In another game played, Micoud recorded their second consecutive victory, defeating Laborie 3 – 0. Scoring for the victors were Gervie Altidore 9th and 43rd minute and Keylan Joseph in the 54th minute.
