Saint Lucia Makes Strides in CXC

By Voice Reporter

Saint Lucia has firmly established its position with improved performance in the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) assessments, achieving an impressive overall pass rate of 78.05% at the CSEC level – the highest in five years and well above the regional average.

Local education authorities recognize this achievement as a clear indication of positive educational outcomes for the nation.

Minister for Education and Innovation Shawn Edward praised students for their commendable performance in this year’s CXC examinations, emphasizing that this marks Saint Lucia’s best performance in the past five years. However, the Education Minister expressed concern regarding students’ capabilities in Mathematics.

In response, he announced that the government has allocated $250,000 to hire retired ‘expert maths teachers’ to provide targeted assistance, ensuring students are well-equipped for their studies in this critical subject. He commended schools and teachers for their diligent efforts in preparing students for the exams, which contributed to surpassing previous years’ performances.

“Mathematics remains an area of concern that we are actively addressing. While Saint Lucia continues to score above the regional mean in Mathematics, we are striving to achieve a higher level of academic satisfaction,” he stated during a media briefing on Monday.

Despite this concern, the minister expressed strong satisfaction with the overall results. He noted that some students performed outstandingly, and the significant presence of female students in the top 20 ranks highlighted boys’ progress as well.

Minister Edward affirmed, “This aligns with our strategic efforts at the Ministry of Education, where we focus on engaging boys at their level, ensuring maximum participation and success in the classroom and throughout their educational journey.”

Saint Lucia’s performance in CXC exams has consistently improved over the past five years, culminating in the strongest results in 2025. The recent outcomes not only surpassed the regional averages in English and Mathematics but also secured the nation’s fifth place regionally.

This upward trend is corroborated by an overall performance increase in 2024 following a dip in 2022.
