According to the concerned residents, some motorists use the promenade as a race track putting the lives of road users in danger. They say motorists drive on it at break-neck speed, with some engaging in dangerous bike stunts, which includes wheelies and other reckless maneuvers.
The most recent fatal vehicular accident occurred on the promenade last Friday evening when a female resident of Bruceville was struck by a vehicle while trying to cross the promenade.
A few years ago, a male was also killed on the promenade after being struck by a vehicle.
Residents of the community are making a clarion call for the authority to place road signs and road markings on the promenade for the safety of the general public, especially students of the schools located along it.
They are also calling on motorists to desist from driving recklessly on the promenade.
Kent Richard, a resident of Brucevile said that for some time now they have been clamoring for speed bumps to be placed on the promenade.
“Speed bumps on the promenade will make the area a bit safer. Children are always walking on the promenade, which is now a dangerous place to walk during certain time of the day,” Richard said.
“Some motorists drive on the promenade like they’re mad,” he added.
According to him, if the authority does not do something now to deal with the problem, more lives will soon be lost on the promenade due to reckless driving.
Rawl Harrow, another concerned resident said: “Motorists have fun driving on the promenade like they’re mad. They do so all day long without thinking of the safety of road users.”
“Apart from speed bumps, we also need road signs on the promenade to indicate that there are schools in the area,” he added.
A non-national, who is here on vacation, said: “I have seen bikers zoomed past me on the promenade. It’s crazy.”
The situation is also of grave concern to the staff of the schools located along the promenade. They are calling on the authority to place the necessary road signs and road markings on it that will make the area safe for road users, especially the students.
