The upcoming climax of the Senior Women’s Inter-District Football Championship marks just one chapter in an increasingly vibrant era for women’s football in Saint Lucia. Throughout this season, young female athletes have been showcasing their talent in hopes of earning scholarships to colleges and universities in the United States.

Recently, Anthony Roy, founder of Anthony Roy Collegiate Placement Services, spearheaded a talent identification camp at the Saint Lucia Football Association (SLFA) Technical Centre in Mabouya Valley. The camp, open to male and female footballers aged 14 to 24, aimed to provide opportunities not only to refine athletic skills but also to pursue academic excellence abroad.

“Our goal is to open doors for Saint Lucian youth,” Roy stated, speaking to the SLFA media team. “The last time I was here, I took about 15 girls and boys with me. They’re now thriving in U.S. colleges and universities.”

Roy emphasized the importance of creating sustainable pathways for Saint Lucian athletes through collaboration with the SLFA. A key component of the programme is a commitment from participants to return and represent Saint Lucia on the national stage.

The performance of Saint Lucian girls studying in the United States has been especially impressive. Roy proudly reported that 90% of them are currently on the honour roll or the president’s list at their respective schools—an achievement that speaks to their dedication both on and off the pitch.

Roy’s approach is uncompromising when it comes to setting expectations for young athletes: “We’re serious about academics and athletics. These students are in the United States for a reason—to pave the way for future Saint Lucians to follow,” he said.

As for the potential within Saint Lucia, Roy sees untapped talent and believes discipline and commitment are crucial to unlocking it. He encourages parents to support their daughters’ involvement in football, noting, “Don’t be afraid to let your girls play soccer—there’s a future in it for them.”

With initiatives like Roy’s and growing support for women’s football, the prospects for Saint Lucian athletes continue to expand—both on the field and in the classroom.
