Danny Martin is determined to attain recognition as a committed young boxer in the local and regional arena.

In his second competitive appearance at the OECS Boxing Championships, held here, he won a Gold Medal in the Welterweight division, playing a crucial role in Team Saint Lucia retaining its championship title.
Danny’s tenacity in the ring captured the crowd’s admiration, leading to a scholarship for studies at the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College (SALCC). His performance stands as a testament to the bold spirit of Saint Lucian fighters who rise to the occasion.
Amidst the excitement of the ring-side action, the seventeen-year-old Martin expressed to VOICE SPORTS his ambitions and aspirations in the boxing world.
Residing in the Grand Riviere community of Gros Islet, Danny previously attended Patricia James Secondary School before his transition to SALCC for higher education.
Originally a basketball player in his early teens, Danny switched to boxing after relocating from the United Kingdom to Saint Lucia.
Inspired by his father, a personal fitness trainer, he took on the sport, observing his father’s training routine. Danny quickly immersed himself in the boxing gym, training with his peers and building confidence.
With over a year of experience, he adapted well to the sport despite the initial challenges.
What excites Danny about boxing?
Competing in the Welterweight division at 71kg, he values the individual nature of the sport. “In team sports, you can perform well and still lose because of others. But boxing is about you—how you train and how you perform in the ring,” he stated.
“I chose boxing because it’s a fast-paced sport that helps me become strong and fit. Initially, I was a bit scared and unsure, but after learning the techniques and getting accustomed to it, I fell in love with the sport. It has become a crucial part of my life.”
What are Danny’s prospects in boxing?
“I aim to compete in many more amateur fights. In each bout, I want to be faster and stronger. These are my goals to reach the next level,” he asserted.
Danny also credits his family’s ‘sporting genes’ for his success. With a father who practiced judo, Danny briefly dabbled in it but quickly realized it wasn’t for him.
“Eventually, I found my passion in boxing. My dad has been instrumental in my training, and I am confident and determined to excel in this sport,” he declared.
